Wheaton

Wheaton is located northwest of Silver Spring and is named after General Frank Wheaton who successfully defended DC from attack by the Confederate Army in 1864. In the 1950's the area was developed with modest homes - cape cods, ranch houses and split levels. The mixed-income area has been declining for the past few decades but now there is a vibe of renewal. The Metro (service started in 1990 and has the longest escalator in the Western Hemisphere), infill development, redevelopment, Costco is part of the revitalization. The Wheaton Redevelopment Program is working on bringing public and private investment to the area and an updated master plan shows some big expectations in - beautified public spaces, jobs, housing, walkability on their minds. Local businesses and ethnic restaurants abound. You can find single family homes below $400,000.
