Named in the 1890's for the London suburb Kensington Gardens the town developed as a place for Washington's well-heeled people to have a summer retreat. Handsome Victorian-styled homes with wrap around porches were built many of which are now on the Register of Historic Places. Today there are still Victorian homes along with newer Victorian and Craftman styled homes and tree lined streets with a small town feel. There is a charming shopping district with many antique stores, a Marc train station and other shopping choices.
