The town's name can be traced to the Gaither family of VIrginia. Shortly before the Revolutionary War, Benjamin Gaither and his bride moved to her 200 acres of dowry land now located at Frederick and Diamond Avenue. In the early 1800's Gaithersburg incorporated as a town of 200 people. Fast forward to today and it is a hub for bio tech companies, National Institutes of Standards and Technology and the Atomic Energy Commission. It now has more than 65,000 residents and is the fourth largest city in Maryland. According to CNN Money 2012 it was rated the #1 Best Place to Raise your Kids in Maryland."
